| The memorial service for Commander USN (ret.) and Emeritus Associate Professor from E.I.U., Waldo Born, will take place at First Presbyterian Church, Charleston on January 12, 2008. At 12:30 p.m. there will be a celebratory gathering in the parlor before services begin at 1 p.m. in the sanctuary. There will be a luncheon following the service. A handicap accessible elevator is available at the church. Waldo was born December 20, 1927 in Piatt County to Albert Lynn and Ruchiel Murphy Born, the eldest of eight children. He attended school in Bement, Illinois and graduated from Bement High School as salutatorian in 1945. He was awarded a four year academic scholarship to the University of Illinois which he relinquished to join the Navy to fly and serve his country. After graduation, Waldo entered the Navy's V5 Plan and became a Flying Midshipman. Some 3,000 men of this country were selected and honored to be trained as Naval Aviators. He served in Squadrons VC-33, VF-31 & VX5. Over the course of his 30 year career in the Navy he flew over 6000 hours in many different types of aircraft. These included the TBM Avenger, the AD Skyraider, jets F2H-2 and F2H-3/4 Banshees concluding with flying the A4 on the day of his Navy retirement in 1975 in Kingsville, Texas. Waldo had served aboard the USS Saratoga as ship's company. He was Catapult and Arresting gear Officer and later Aircraft Handling Officer. He served aboard the Saratoga for 3 years. In the USS Saratoga, he submitted the original catapult and arresting gear control, flight and hangar-deck lighting design alterations which are now standard in fleet aircraft carriers. At Patuxent River, Maryland, he managed test and combat deployment of the first squadron of special aircraft equipped with advanced airborne infrared detection and tracking equipment (ala Desert Storm). Waldo's second career was as an educator. He studied electrical engineering at Renssalear in Troy, NY and Ohio State University in Columbus. He also attended James Millikin University in Decatur and Del Mar in Corpus Christi, Texas. He received his BS degree from the University of Albuquerque, MBA from Texas A&I (now Texas A&M) in Kingsville, Texas. His PhD in Finance, was awarded from the University of Texas at Austin. He then taught at Texas A&M's Real Estate Research Center and E.I.U. He has written and published many articles and papers in regional and national journals on advanced techniques of economic and market analysis. Involvement in EAA Oshkosh was on going from 1990. Waldo has flown over 770 Young Eagles in his Mooney M-20C aircraft. This program encourages young people to embrace a career in aviation. The Train a Pilot Program (T.A.P.) is near and dear in the hearts of all EAA Chapter 274 members which Waldo was a member. Ten High School age competitors have benefited from this program which gives these students the opportunity to receive their private pilot's license. Service to the Presbyterian Church over the years was important to Waldo. He was a life long member serving as Elder many times in several churches. Waldo was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers John and Albert. He is survived by his devoted wife, Margaret (Peggy) Born of 56 years, his children Wally Jr., Meg, Beth and Anne; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren; four sisters, Mary Alice, Sally, Louise, Ruth and a brother, James. Interment of his ashes will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
