Obituary for Marilyn Sinkez

Marilyn M. Sinkez VIRGINIA BEACH - Marilyn M. Sinkez, 78, died July 13, 2008, at her home in Virginia Beach. Marilyn was born March 22, 1930, in Norfolk. She was preceded by her parents, John Cantwell Midgette and Ethel Ackiss Midgette. Her father was from Rodanthe, N.C., and her mother from Creeds, Princess Anne County, Virginia. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, George Sinkez. She met George, a naval aviator, in 1950 and they married that year. They had a long, wonderful life together and enduring love for each other. She is also survived by her son, Stephen of Butler, N.J., and his children, Kristine of Silver Spring, Md., and Matthew, a student at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va.; her son Gordon, his wife Cynthia Brewington, and their children, Lauren, Christopher, and Paul of Cary, N.C.; her brother, retired U.S. Coast Guard Cmdr. John C. Midgett Jr. and his wife Elizabeth Langston of Mint Spring, Va., and their children, John and David Midgett and Michelle Parker. Marilyn leaves behind many nieces and nephews. Marilyn was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She especially enjoyed gardening and had over 40 varieties of camellias in her garden in Thoroughgood. Marilyn was a 1948 graduate of Granby High School in Norfolk. In 1950, she received her A.A. from the Division of William and Mary, now Old Dominion University. Marilyn was a member of the Thoroughgood Garden Club, the Meadowbrook Forest Garden Club, the Elizabeth River Women's Club, the Great Bridge chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Executive Club. As a member of Baylake United Methodist Church in Virginia Beach, she also enjoyed the Edna Britt Church Circle. Marilyn was employed for more than 20 years at the Adam Thoroughgood House as an historic interpreter. She received great pleasure in sharing her knowledge with the many visitors and children each year. A funeral will be held at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Deborah S. Clark, associate minister at Baylake United Methodist Church, will conduct the service. Following the service, burial will be in the Pines section of Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk. Following the interment, friends are invited to a reception at the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club, 7001 Hampton Blvd., Norfolk. The family would like to thank all of the Sentara hospice nurses and caregivers, as well as the many friends and neighbors, for all their assistance. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
