Obituary of Jack Everling that appeared in a Providence RI newspaper
EVERLING, JACK EUGENE, 80, An officer and a gentleman, peacefully passed
away
on November 26, 2007 in Minnesota due to complications of lung cancer. He
had
been visiting family in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area at the time.
He was the beloved husband of the late Virginia Anne (Carey) Everling. He
was
born July 23, 1927 in Hedgesville, Montana, a son of the late Florence
(Mougey) and Benedict Everling. He was predeceased by infant siblings,
Robert
and Audrey. He lived in Coventry for 37 years and touched many lives. Mr.
Everling was in the U.S. Navy for thirty years where he was a naval aviator
and Korean War combat veteran. He earned many medals and honors, retiring in
1975 at the rank of Commander. Among his last assignments in the Navy were
to
facilitate the closing of Quonset Point, NAS and of Davisville NS SeaBee
base.
Jack was a real estate agent at Coldwell Banker in Coventry since 1981. He
was the assistant Governor for the Rotary as well as a member of the
Pawtuxet
Valley Rotary Club, where he received the prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship
award. Jack was involved with many groups and charities including: The
Quonset Air Museum, Camp E-Hun-Tee, PPAC, Roger Williams Zoo (for all the
children to enjoy), Project Aids RI, Habitat for Humanity, Crossroads, The
Chamber of Commerce, RI Food Bank, Tomaquog Museum, Coldwell Banker Cares,
Spurwink RI, Saratoga museum, RI Scholars, Jerico Place, the U.S.O., The
V.F.W., Meals on Wheels, and he was on the board at the Kent County
Hospital.
Among his many associations were The United States Naval Institute, The
Chosin Few, The Flying Midshipmen, Air Group 19, VA-195, The U.S.S.
Princeton
Association, The U.S.S. Boxer Association, the Maritime Museum of San Diego,
and The Naval Air Museum in Pensacola, Florida, and the Wood Estates
Residents Association.
Jack was very loving and giving. He was a founder of the Apple Blossom Lane
annual July 4th parade in Wood Estates where he chauffeured the
'princess(es)
and queen mum' in his classic Cadillac. He had many interests including
writing short stories and poetry, listening to music, dancing, and even
skydiving (at ages 70, 72 and 80). Jack was a friend to all and will be
sadly
missed.
Jack is survived by a son, Michael Benedict Everling, of Los Angeles;
Siblings William Wayne and his wife Audrey, of Saint Paul; Margaret Wills,
of
Phoenix, Arizona; Betty Connolly, of Bridgeport, Connecticut, Charles
Richard
and his wife Dawn, of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota; Benedict Albert, Jr.
and his wife Beth, of Cleveland, Georgia; Thomas Edward and his wife Yvonne;
of Minneapolis; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Jack was buried, with honors, on December 3, 2007 at Fort Snelling National
Cemetery, in Minnesota. There will be a Memorial service followed by a light
lunch on January 4, 2008 at the Quonset 'O' Club (200 Lt. James Brown Rd.,
North Kingstown) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions
can
be made out in Jack's name to Coldwell Banker Cares to be later distributed
to some of Jack's favorite charities.
