ROBERT EDWIN HOARE (Age 81) CMDR, U.S. Navy (Retired) Of Annandale and Sterling, VA on Wednesday, January 13, 2010, at INOVA Fairfax Hospital beloved father of Robert E. Hoare II and Jeffery A. Hoare. Robert E. Hoare, 81, who served the Navy for 28 years before retiring in 1973, died Wednesday, January 13, 2010, at INOVA Fairfax Hospital of respiratory failure from aspiration pneumonia associated with advanced dementia and sepsis. CDR, an Annandale Resident lived in the Washington area for the last 41 years was a native of Racine Wisconsin. He was born on November 3, 1928 in Racine, Wisconsin to parents Claude and Lila (NEE: Anderson) Hoare. Robert E. Hoare graduated early from Washington Park High School in Racine, Wisconsin entered the Navy as a Flying Midshipman, V5 Program in January 1946. In 1948, he completed preflight and basic training Pensacola, FL. He qualified in aircraft carrier qualifications aboard the USS CABOT in April 1949. In August 1949, he attended advanced seaplane training and received Naval Aviation wings at Corpus Christi, TX. As a Naval Aviator, he flew various single engine and multi engine aircraft including the SNJ "Texan" Trainer, PBM, PBY, P2V-SF, T-28, twin-engine Beach Craft and P3A , HU-16. He was a member of the Flying Midshipman Association (FMA), the Association of Naval Aviation (ANA) Inc., and Patron Four-Five Association. From September to November 1949 he was a student at the Fleet Airborne Electronics Training Unit, Norfolk, VA. From December 1949 to September 1952 he served with at NAS Bermuda, NAS Norfolk and the NAS Coco Solo, Panama Canal Zone, and fly the PBM with VP-45. Commissioned as Ensign in 1950 and promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade in 1952. From October 1952 to March 1955 he was an Instructor of student pilots in advanced flight training AT NAS, Corpus Christi, TX. From April 1955 to June 1955 he attended Ground Controlled Approach school at the NAS Olathe, KS. From July 1955 to June April 1957 he served as a Ground Controlled Approach controller in NAS, Argentia, Newfoundland. From July 1955 to April 1957 he was a Ground Controlled Approach (GCA) controller at Argentenia, Newfoundland. Promoted to Lieutenant in July 1955. From June 1957 to June 1959 he flew the P2V-SF with VP-7 out of NAS Brunswick, ME with deployments to Argentia, Newfoundland, Keflavik, Iceland, and Rota, Spain. From 1959 to 1963 he attended the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School at Monterey, CA. he received a degree in Naval Science in 1961 and a B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering in1963. Promoted to Lieutenant Commander in 1960. From July 1963 to July 1965 : Avionics Officer and then Maintenance Officer with the Staff, Commander Fleet Air Wing 11, NAS Jacksonville, FL. August 1965 to January 1966: Student at Armed Forces Staff College, Norfolk, VA February 1966 to May 1969 he served as Maintenance Officer for the Staff, Commander ASW Forces, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, Norfolk, VA May 1969 to August 1973; Program Manager, Air ASW Acoustic Program Office, Naval Air Systems Command, PMA 249. In August 1973 he retired from the U.S. Navy. In retirement he worked for various private companies in support of various military programs including Vredenberg Consultants, The Energystics Corporation, Mantech Corporation, Metter Industries, General Scientific, and Computer Systems Development Corp (CSDC). His marriage to Roberta Mary Hurley on October 15, 1953 ended in divorce October 30, 1987. His eldest son Robert E. Hoare II predeceased him in death on June 19, 2008. He is survived his son Jeffery A. Hoare, three grandchildren, Kathleen, Meredith, and Carolyn and three great grandchildren, Jacob, Ryan, and Hillary.
