Captain James R. (Jim) Foster, 81, USN - Retired, of Duluth, GA, died on September 4, 2010 at Gwinnett Medical Center in Duluth, GA. The cause of death was complications from pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, according to his family. Captain Foster was a highly decorated fighter pilot who flew missions in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. His distinguished service led him to be chosen to lead the Navy's recovery efforts of the Gemini Astronauts in the Indian Ocean. In addition, Captain Foster achieved Centurian status for over 100 aircraft carrier landings. After retiring from the Navy in 1974, Captain Foster had a successful 18 year business career in the Missile Systems Division of Rockwell International. Captain Foster was born on February 17, 1929, in Shinglehouse, Pennsylvania to Lucelia Hendricks Foster and Charles James Foster. He was the oldest of three children. He married his high school sweetheart, Audrey Jean Nickel, in 1957. They had five sons. Captain Foster was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Foster, son, Mark Foster, parents, Lucelia and Charles Foster and his brothers-in-law, Robert (Bob) Driscoll and Howard Nickel. He is survived by his loving wife, Audrey Jean Foster; sons, James A. Foster, David Foster, Tom Foster, and John Foster; as well as their spouses. In addition, he is survived by eight grandchildren; sister, Janet Driscoll; and in-laws, Richard and Beverly Nickel and Francis Nickel; as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews. The family will receive friends and family from 9:00-11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 7th, at Crowell Brothers Peachtree Chapel Funeral Home in Norcross, followed by a celebration of Captain Foster's life at 11:00 a.m. A graveside service will follow later at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA. The family wishes to thank all the many doctors and nurses who cared for Captain Foster during his illness, especially April Aderman, his hospital caregivers, and including all the friends and extended family members for their prayers and support.
